Vallejo Neighborhoods: Vallejo Annex

James E. Kern

In 1915 a new real estate tract called Vallejo Annex was opened just east of downtown.

That same year, Vallejo and Mare Island received the good news that the shipyard had been awarded a contract to build the USS California, the only battleship ever built on the west coast.

To honor this significant shipbuilding project, streets in the new subdivision were named for men who had been instrumental in securing the contract.

Some of the streets in Vallejo Annex were named for:

Vallejo Mayor James Roney

Lobbyist and local businessman George Campbell

Naval Constructor Henry Gleason, who headed up construction of the vessel.

Former Vallejo Mayor and Chamber of Commerce employee J.J. Madigan
